The MSP Polar Bear Plunge is - and has been for the last 14 years - THE official event of Winter. For just $50 in pledges, participants take a dip into the Chesapeake Bay in Annapolis to raise money for Special Olympics Maryland. Founded in 1997, the event will celebrate its 15th anniversary on Jan. 29, 2011.

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco and SOMD Athlete Rosa Marcellino, who recently had national legislation passed in her name banning the R-word, will serve as Co-Chairman. In the last 14 years, approximately 60,000 Plungers - many of them Marylanders - have taken the Plunge, and raised a total of $16.1 million dollars for the athletes of Special Olympics Maryland. With an enduring commitment to better the lives of those with intellectual disabilities, combined

Before and after your big Plunge, they invite you to chill out in the heated festival tent, featuring fan favorites like Sandtastics impressive sand sculpture, the Astro Events Family Fun Zone, great food and drinks, local and national vendors, and a variety of local entertainment acts and attractions including ArtCars, caricature artists and roving entertainers from About Faces Entertainment (stilt walkers, balloon sculpting magician, clowns and a mime.)

The Super Plunge Team will take not one, not two but 24 chilly dips into the the Chesapeake Bay over a 24-hour period. Sandy Point is open to the public until 5pm on Friday, Jan. 28 and will reopen at 8am on Saturday, Jan. 29.

* Thirty-five (35) different states were represented at the 2010 MSP Polar Bear Plunge, including Hawaii, California, Florida and New Hampshire.

* Athlete Rosa Marcellino, a 9-year-old girl from Edgewater, Md. will serve as the Co-Chairman for the 2011 Plunge along with Ravens QB Joe Flacco.

* The Plunge is overwhelmingly supported by residents of Baltimore (City and County) and Anne Arundel County. Participants from these areas account for 2/3 of all Plungers.

* In 2010, the addition of Frigid Friday - a Friday Plunge designed exclusively for schools teams - was enormously successful, attracting 21 different schools to Sandy Point State Park. It is expected to increase substantially in 2011.
