Kancherla Gopanna (1620-1680), was a tahsildar or a glorified clerk during the Nizam rule. It was sheer providence that he was led to the dilapidated shelter Pokala Dammakka constructed for Sri Rama and instantly surrendered to Him. He used his position as a government official and brought glory to Sita. Rama and Lakshmana through a proper temple. But the real glory came through his songs. In fact, Tyagarajas mother sang them for him and instilled Rama bhakti.

Simple Telugu language, earnestness, affection, honesty and surrender are the hallmarks of Ramadasu. Gopanna was and still is known by the name Ramadasu, literally, slave of Rama.

Ramadasu was jailed for spending public funds to construct the temple. That didnt stop him from singing! He sang through the torture in the jail for 12 years and even when free.

For Ramadasa, Rama of Bhadrachalam was the only truth. He was a friend, a servant, a devotee and a confidant. Ramadasu lauded, teased, chided, pleaded, submitted, blessed…In short, he experienced Rama through every cell of his being. So deep seated was his devotion that Rama and Lakshmana themselves appeared to the then Nizam and cleared the debt for him!

ఎంతో రుచి రా, ఓ రామ నీ నామ మెంతో రుచిరా, ఎంతో రుచి ఎంతో రుచి ఎంతో రుచిరా, అంటూ ఆ రామయ్యను ఎంత కీర్తించినా, తనివి తీరదు, మనసు ఆగదు, వెయ్యినోళ్ళ పొగడినా ఆ ఆర్తి తీరదు. ఆంజనేయుడిలా, ఆ రామయ్యను సదా మనసులో నింపుకునే, భాగ్యము ఇవ్వలని అందరమూ నిరంతరమూ ప్రార్ధిస్తున్నాము గదా.

కంచెర్ల గోపన్న (1620-1680), నిజాం పాలనలో తహశీల్దార్. పోకల దమ్మక్క, శ్రీ రాముడి కోసం నిర్మించిన తాటాకు పందిరి, రామదాసును కదలించింది. ప్రభుత్వ అధికారిగా తన పదవిని ఉపయోగించుకుని, రామ లక్ష్మణ సీతమ్మకు కీర్తిని తెచ్చారు, సరైన ఆలయం నిర్మించడము ద్వారా. కానీ గోపన్న పాటల ద్వారా, నిజమైన కీర్తి వచ్చింది. నిజానికి, త్యాగరాజు తల్లి అతని కోసం, గోపన్న పాటలు పాడింది, రామ భక్తిని ప్రేరేపించింది.

సాధారణ తెలుగు భాష, శ్రద్ధ, ఆప్యాయత, నిజాయితీ మరియు లొంగిపోవటం రామదాసు యొక్క ముఖ్య లక్షణాలు. గోపన్నను రామదాసు అనే పేరుతో పిలుస్తారు, అంటే రాముని బానిస.

ఆలయ నిర్మాణానికి ప్రజా నిధులు ఖర్చు చేసినందుకు, రామదాసు జైలు పాలయ్యారు. అయినా అతనిని పాడకుండా ఆపలేదు! ఆయన జైలులో హింసించబడుతూ 12 సంవత్సరాలు కూడా పాడారు మరియు బయట ఉన్నప్పుడు కూడా పాడారు.

రామదాసుకు, భద్రాచలం రాముడు మాత్రమే నిజం. అతను ఒక స్నేహితుడు, సేవకుడు, భక్తుడు మరియు నమ్మకమైనవాడు. రామదాసు ప్రశంసలు అందుకున్నాడు, ఆటపట్టించాడు, కోరిపోయాడు, సమర్పించాడు, ఆశీర్వదించాడు… సంక్షిప్తంగా, అతను తన ప్రతి అణువు అణువు ద్వారా, రాముడిని అనుభవించాడు. అతని భక్తి ఎంత లోతుగా ఉందో తెలుసా, రామ లక్ష్మణులు, అప్పటి నిజాం నవాబు కు కనిపించి, రామదాసు అప్పులు తీర్చారు!

ఈ రోజు ఎందరో గాయకులు, రామదాసు జయంతిని పురస్కరించుకొని, అమెరికా కాలిఫొర్నియా లోని సిలికాన్ ఆంధ్ర విశ్వ విద్యాలయములో, ఆ రామదాసుని కీర్తనలు మధురముగా పాడుతూ, ఆ భద్రాద్రి రాముడిని, భక్తితో కొలిచారు, రామ కుటుంబ పరివార సమేతముగా. పెద్దలతో పాటుగా చిన్న పిల్లలు కూడా, మధురమైన సుస్వర భరిత కంఠాలతో, తేట తెనెలొలుకు తెలుగు పదాల ఉరవడిలో, ఆ రామయ్య కీర్తనలు తో ప్రజలకు చెవుల విందు చేసారు.
