The National Cherry Blossom Festival is an annual two-week event that celebrates springtime in Washington, DC as well as the 1912 gift of the cherry blossom trees and the enduring friendship between the people of the US and Japan.
The National Cherry Blossom Festival, Inc. is the organization that coordinates, produces, and supports creative and diverse activities promoting traditional and contemporary arts and culture, natural beauty and the environment, and community spirit and youth education. The Target Performance Stage plays host to a wide range of performances, from Japanese culture groups to local acoustic musicians. Sylvan Theatre is on the grounds of the Washington Monument. Few Performances of the day: * Diafanes - From Sao Paulo, Brazil, Diafanes is a rock band whose music shows a strong Japanese influence. The band plays exotic instruments, such as the koto (Japanese harp), mixes with Japanese music and sometimes sings in Japanese. * Brent Peterson - Taking queues from folk, reggae, and soul music, Brent Peterson believes music should move people, ideally towards dancing. * Singo Lodoyo USA performs an Indonesian traditional show known as Reog Ponorogo. Fireworks Light Up the Night Southwest Waterfront, 600 Water Street, SW, on Saturday, at 5:00 pm as the Washington Waterfront Association kicks off the fifth annual Prelude to the Fireworks - a free, 3-hour festival of family entertainment that includes live musical performances, kids craft activities, cuisine from local restaurants and special guest appearances for the kids to enjoy. At 8:30 pm, all eyes headed toward the sky for a spectacular Fireworks display. Enjoy the sky spectacle on land at the festival or watch them from the water on the fireworks cruise aboard the Spirit of Washington.
